By Nathan Farrugia, CEO Up Your Level Coaching
There have been numerous occasions during my journey as a leader where I have felt overwhelmed, anxious, and stressed. Most of the time, these feelings stemmed from a sense of inadequacy or lack of skills to handle complex situations, whether they were real or perceived. This motivated me to delve deeper into the study of leadership, attend courses, and pursue an MBA, which ultimately bolstered my self-confidence and enabled me to confront challenges with greater assurance. Consequently, my mental well-being improved significantly.
Self-motivation is deeply rooted in self-worth. The feeling of being an impostor within ourselves generates self-doubt, leading to stress and anxiety. Merely addressing the problem with stress and time management techniques provided only temporary relief, as it was treating the symptoms rather than the root cause. Today, I rely on my Vistage peer group to share the weight of leadership, which has substantially reduced my stress levels. Additionally, I prioritize regular exercise, sufficient sleep, healthy eating, steering clear of toxic relationships, and nurturing close friendships to create a fulfilling life.
As a coach for business leaders, my strategy to mitigate workplace stress involves equipping individuals in leadership roles to tackle the pressures that come with management. While corporate wellness programs play a valuable role in helping employees and managers cope with stress and bolster their resilience (which we also offer), there’s nothing more effective than inner self-motivation to weather a storm.
Our leadership programmes embrace this approach to help managers and leaders thrive under pressure instead of succumbing to it. Our FIRE methodology is a proven system for developing transformational leadership skills, individual resilience, and maximizing leaders’ impact on their teams. It can be implemented for small teams or across an entire organization.
If you are a CEO/Founder whose business is experiencing growth pains, it’s essential to invest in your top team to help them build competence and autonomy. If your team is feeling the pressure translate into stress, you need managers who can step in to coach and motivate them through the growth phase. Autonomy, self-reliance, and self-belief are all components of a less stressed leader, and these are skills that can be cultivated to foster a performance-driven culture. Instead of merely addressing the symptoms of burnout, focus on preventing it by fostering stronger leadership at all levels of your organization.
