UAE GEARS UP FOR NATIONAL PASSENGER RAIL

Etihad rail connects emirates, slashing travel times and boosting sustainable mobility.

The UAE is on the verge of a transportation revolution. In 2026, Etihad Rail will launch the country’s first fully integrated national passenger rail network, a bold step set to transform how residents and visitors move across the seven emirates. Already a backbone for freight operations, Etihad Rail is now bringing speed, comfort, and sustainability to the passenger experience.

With the first phase linking Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Fujairah, travelers will soon enjoy swift journeys across major urban and industrial hubs. The initial routes form the spine of a network that will ultimately serve 11 cities, stretching from Al Sila on the Saudi border in the west to Fujairah on the east coast. These connections will weave the UAE closer together, making long-distance travel faster, greener, and far more convenient.

Fast, Comfortable, Connected Passenger Experience

The new trains are designed for both speed and comfort, capable of reaching 200 km/h and carrying around 400 passengers per trip. Multiple seating classes from First, Business, and Economy cater to diverse needs, while contemporary interiors, ergonomic seating, Wi-Fi, and individual power outlets ensure a modern, productive, and relaxing journey.

Initial travel times are impressive: Abu Dhabi to Dubai in roughly 50 to 57 minutes, and Abu Dhabi to Fujairah in about 1 hour 40 to 45 minutes. Future high-speed services could reduce Abu Dhabi–Dubai travel to just 30 minutes, redefining regional mobility. Stations are strategically located in key hubs such as Mohammed Bin Zayed City in Abu Dhabi, Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai, University City in Sharjah, and the Al Hilal area in Fujairah, with additional stations opening in phases.

More Than Just a Train and Why It Matters

Etihad Rail’s passenger network is about more than speed, it’s about connectivity, sustainability, and economic growth. By offering a reliable alternative to road travel, the network helps reduce congestion and carbon emissions, while linking key trade and tourism hubs across the country. The system also sets the stage for future GCC integration, with plans for cross-border links to Saudi Arabia and Oman.

The project builds on the success of Etihad Rail’s freight operations, which began nationwide in February 2023. Covering over 900 km, the freight network connects ports, industrial zones, and border points, boosting logistics efficiency and underpinning UAE infrastructure development. The passenger rail will leverage this established foundation to deliver safe, reliable, and seamless service.

Future Outlook

Phased passenger operations in 2026 mark just the beginning. As additional stations and routes come online, Etihad Rail will increasingly become a cornerstone of daily life in the UAE, offering a world-class alternative to road travel, supporting economic expansion, and advancing sustainability goals. For residents, businesses, and tourists alike, the new network promises faster journeys, smoother connections, and a glimpse into the future of travel in the Emirates.
