Terra, part of Expo City Dubai, showcases the vast potential of nature-based solutions in addressing environmental challenges in the urban environments of the UAE by integrating natural processes in both building design and operations.
Terra’s surrounding botanical garden is home to over 100 native plant species that enhance soil health and provide critical habitats for local wildlife to thrive. Along with a green terrace, Terra’s landscape creates a microclimate, the cooler temperature reducing the ‘urban heat island’ effect and thus the building’s cooling requirements. A productive farming zone highlights viable crops suitable for arid climates that could contribute to future food security in the region.
The reed beds in Terra’s water management system play an integral role by mimicking the natural ecosystem services of wetlands. All the building’s water passes through the reed root zones, where it undergoes natural filtration and purification.
Inside Terra, immersive exhibits educate visitors on the importance of ecosystem restoration and preserving natural habitats. Real-world examples such as urban beekeeping inspire visitors to adopt similar strategies in their communities, while mangrove planting builds appreciation for the important role that nature plays.
Globally, nature-based solutions have the potential to provide up to 37% of the mitigation efforts required to meet the Paris Agreement targets by 2030[1]. Part of a city that is on a journey to net zero by 2050, Terra is at the forefront of Expo City Dubai’s efforts, trialing nature-based solutions that can be replicated to maximize a positive environmental impact.
