NMDC STRENGTHENS ABU DHABI’S WATER RESILIENCE

Emergency Lagoon Project Highlights Infrastructure Investment and Long-Term Sustainability Goals.

Abu Dhabi continues to advance critical infrastructure projects designed to support sustainable growth and future resilience, with NMDC Infra securing a significant new contract to construct an emergency lagoon facility for the emirate’s water network. The AED 288 million project, awarded by TAQA Water Solutions, reinforces the growing importance of strategic water infrastructure as the UAE prepares for continued population growth, urban expansion, and increasing demand for essential utilities.

One-million-cubic-meter emergency lagoon planned

The project will see NMDC Infra, a wholly owned subsidiary of NMDC Group, design and construct a one-million-cubic-meter emergency lagoon in Abu Dhabi. The scope includes the development of inlet and outlet structures, installation of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipelines, pumps, valves, and associated mechanical systems. Construction is expected to be completed within 24 months.

Supporting Abu Dhabi’s long-term water security

While the project may appear highly specialized, its strategic importance cannot be overstated. Emergency lagoons provide critical backup capacity within water infrastructure networks, helping operators manage fluctuations in demand, maintenance activities, and unexpected operational disruptions. As Abu Dhabi continues to invest in world-class utility systems, projects such as this play an essential role in ensuring uninterrupted service delivery while supporting long-term water security objectives.

The award also highlights the expanding role of NMDC Group in delivering complex infrastructure projects across the UAE and international markets. Headquartered in Abu Dhabi, NMDC Group has evolved from its marine dredging origins into a diversified engineering, procurement, construction, and infrastructure powerhouse. Through its portfolio of business units, including NMDC Dredging & Marine, NMDC Energy, NMDC Infra, NMDC Engineering, and NMDC LTS, the group delivers projects that support economic development across multiple sectors.

The latest contract further strengthens NMDC’s growing backlog of infrastructure and marine works. Earlier this year, the group secured additional dredging and reclamation projects in Abu Dhabi, reflecting continued confidence in its ability to execute large-scale developments while maintaining high engineering, environmental, and operational standards.

Strengthening critical infrastructure for future growth

For Abu Dhabi, the emergency lagoon project aligns closely with broader sustainability and resilience ambitions. Water remains one of the region’s most valuable resources, and investments in storage, distribution, and network reliability are becoming increasingly important as cities seek to future-proof critical infrastructure. By enhancing emergency capacity within the water system, the project will contribute to greater operational flexibility while supporting the emirate’s long-term development strategy.

As the UAE continues to prioritize infrastructure that balances growth with sustainability, projects such as the Abu Dhabi emergency lagoon demonstrate how engineering innovation and strategic planning are working together to create more resilient communities. For NMDC Group, the contract represents another milestone in its mission to deliver transformative projects that underpin the nation’s economic and infrastructure ambitions.
